Existential Role of Humans

As we enter the New Year 2026, it may be good to reflect on some of the major issues and challenges we face. We reflect in line with Teilhard Chardin, the eminent Jesuit Philosopher and scientist. Humans are in the sphere of mind and spirit. In this sphere, man (and women) is taken as a thinking organism and in contact with others as equals/partners. He has inter-relations, and he creates culture. Culture, the way of living and functioning, is not produced by one alone; it needs others. This helps him with individual development and progress, and we call it cultural growth. Here, people need society. They grow with others in society. Cut off from society, it is a full stop for one’s life.

Man is social and spiritual. They grow in society through interpersonal relationships. This will lead humans to constant socialization which refers to deepening and strengthening union among members of the human race. As members in society, we collaborate with others in different fields: work, study, art, transport, communication, service, etc. This kind of social-get-togethers increase day-by-day in small and great areas of internal and external levels.

According to T. Chardin, love is the greatest power and route of the cosmos. The whole cosmos moves in the groove of love. Without the love–directed route, the cosmos cannot exist and function. Similarly, love is the mightiest power of human being in the world. The whole cosmic process is involved in love. The whole cosmos is knit together in and by love. It is the cosmic energy which keeps the whole cosmos in its (their) place and positions.

The cosmos as we understand is not like a dead diagram, but a limitless space where the constellations dance in unison. This is the mystery of the universe. It is the biggest community of our imagination and contemplation. Millions and millions of stars and heavenly bodies exist and move in constant process and procession. It is activated, governed and sustained by love; this is the divine milieu per excellence. It is in love and with love that we enter and gauge this fantastic marathon. There is the supreme and divine hand behind it. It is in perfect order, unison, and beauty that the whole cosmic wonder keeps on from the moment of creation. Man’s position is in the heart of this reality as we become conscious of the divine milieu. We are in the heart of the cosmic process.

Man is not an outsider watching the universe, but fully in and involved in the same. There is no clash and collision. The whole cosmic existence and process is inspiring the humans to reflect and discover the value and role of love. We must understand that the cosmos is not outside of us. We are involved in the huge programme and its prolonged and never-ending process. In love we need to come together and create the cosmic reality in and around us. In this process every human being is responsible for the whole reality of moving toward the unity of the humans.  Only we need to be conscious of it.

To add a little more reflection on love, it is the most basic and fantastic reality we live in and function. In the sacred books we read love as the original source of creation and its growth. Nothing has come into existence by itself. The book of Genesis sings of the song of creation. Similarly, the other books in the Bible continue the dynamism of growth and development of the human race. Coming to the New Testament, we see the culmination of the human story where Jesus is the center of the whole story. The New Year leads us to reflect on the existential role of ours in the universe.
