We live in a world flooded with artificial lights – Camera flashes, Fairy Lights, Social Media feeds, screens that glow, Platforms that display, the light of ego, the glow of popularity, the shine of wealth, the glitter of achievement, the sparkle of social approval, the shimmer of success, that attract our eyes and surround our lives.
The constant glow of screens, applause, achievement and approval can dazzle the eyes, while quietly dimming the soul. It is easy to mistake brightness for truth, confuse visibility with value, and accept noise as wisdom, leading to the loss of our interior vision and the weakening of our inner sight. We may become performers rather than witnesses, restless rather than focused, outwardly illuminated yet inwardly remaining in darkness.
A Call to Shine in Darkness
In the midst of such confusion, the words of Jesus echo with surprising urgency: “Let your light shine” (Matthew 5:16). Shining, to illumine the spaces we occupy with humanity and integrity, goodness and kindness, compassion and unwavering faith. In a world growing comfortable with shadows, God is looking for uncompromising light, because darkness is loud – bold in its confusion, proud in its rebellion, relentless in its noise. In such moments, we hear the call: “Let your light shine.” The light within us is ignited by God himself, and what God lights, no darkness can extinguish.
“You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5: 14-16) – This is our identity and our vocation. We are not called to become light; we already are. We are called to be true to our identity. Just as a city on a hilltop cannot be hidden, so too the light of faith is meant to be public, visible, and transformative. Hence, we should not cover what God has ignited. Sometimes fear, compromise, people-pleasing, and comfort-seeking are the modern ‘bowls’ that suffocate our light.
The cost of hiding the light has consequences. When light withdraws, darkness advances. When light refuses to shine, darkness has access. Darkness is not the problem; the absence of light is. When we compromise truth, light dims; when integrity is sacrificed, the lamp flickers; when truth becomes private to avoid criticism, the city lowers itself from the hill. On the other hand, the darker the night, the more powerful even a small light becomes.
Our world needs witnesses. Living uprightly exposes darkness because of the presence of light. Today, shining means choosing integrity when compromise is easier, living authentically when indulgence is normal, choosing forgiveness when revenge and violence are fashionable, and choosing truth when silence is safer. We need not shine by striving, but being close to the Source THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.
Cost of Choosing Darkness over Light
When we choose darkness over light, we lose clarity. Wrong looks normal, and compromise seems harmless. Darkness dulls the conscience, distorts the truth, and breeds fear and insecurity. We begin to mistrust others and tend to become defensive. Darkness produces anxiety, leading to emotional fragility with suspicion, division and constant outrage. Darkness can be contagious; it spreads faster than light. We witness corruption in leadership, moral confusion in media and a culture of permissiveness.
Darkness shrinks the soul, makes conscience quieter, compassion weaker, courage rare. Darkness separates us from divine intimacy, creating distance, not because God withdraws, but because we turn away from illumination. Refusing to shine is denying our identity. Jesus tells us, “You are the light”; He does not tell ‘Try to be the light.’
Darkness ultimately leads to emptiness, promising freedom without boundaries, pleasure without consequences, power without accountability. Despite technological brilliance, our world is spiritually fatigued, mentally restless, and lonely with loss of meaning. A nation that celebrates shadows eventually forgets what light is like.
How to Let our Light Shine?
Letting our light shine means refusing to hide our faith in a culture that rewards compromises and celebrates moral confusion. It’s choosing integrity when dishonesty is convenient, responsibility when blame is fashionable and courage when silence feels safer. To shine is to live consistently at home, at work and even online – in a way that reflects Christ. It is to practice kindness, face opposition calmly, guard our inner life through prayer and ensure that our good works point not to ourselves but to God.
Letting our light shine in today’s world begins with daily faithfulness: choosing kindness when irritation is easier, truth when compromise is common, and prayer in moments of discouragement. To shine is to live consistently – reflecting Christ in our homes, workplaces, conversations and even in our digital presence. It means guarding our hearts, refusing gossip, taking responsibility for our actions and allowing our quiet good works to glorify God. It demands moral courage and spiritual clarity. It is drawing others to the True Light – CHRIST, for we are called to stand luminous, unwavering, unashamed, so that God alone is glorified.
As I write this article, I hear the alarms, sirens, and the sound of missiles and witness the catastrophe of war. Humanity today stands beneath a troubling shadow of darkness: wars rage, violence multiplies, leaving behind a trail of grief: broken homes, shattered dreams, wounded hearts and innocent victims. Hatred seems louder than compassion, power that silences justice, and indifference hardens the human conscience. The darkness of evil – born of greed, pride, and refusal to recognize one another as brothers and sisters created in the image and likeness of God.
Yet, the deeper the darkness, the more urgent is the call of Jesus to shine. In a world overshadowed by war and violence, fear and division, every act of mercy and compassion, forgiveness and courage, prayer and blessing becomes a powerful flame. Even the smallest flame can remind us not to fear but to hope, to love, and to become witnesses of light. God never asks us to fight the darkness; He simply asks us to shine. This is precisely why our world needs people who dare to shine.
When the darkness of the world feels overwhelming, let’s remember that God never abandons his creation. He lights small lamps of Hope in the hearts of ordinary people, who choose love over hatred, peace over war, truth over fear, compassion over violence, and forgiveness over revenge. God wants to place such lights in our hearts and asks us to let our light shine. Will you allow God to light a lamp in your heart?
Christ our Light
The Holy Fire Ceremony of the Orthodox Church is one of the most profound and symbolic events of the Easter Celebration. It takes place on Holy Saturday Night, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site believed to be the Tomb of Jesus.
Inside the Tomb, the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem enters alone after being carefully searched to ensure that he carries no means of lighting a flame. According to tradition, a mysterious flame – the “Holy Fire” -- appears within the tomb. This light, then, is shared with all the faithful assembled, a beautiful image of communion, sharing light without diminishing, uniting in the bonds of communion, bringing healing and peace.
It is a powerful symbol of Christ’s victory over death. It signifies the triumph of divine light over darkness, it’s a holy, life-giving light – representing truth, purity and divine presence. It’s an invitation to all of us to let the light of Christ ignite our hearts and dispel inner darkness.
Christ is our light, and his light cannot be extinguished, for the light of Christ is living, enduring and victorious. We need not hide in fear, compromise with shadows, or be dim to please a darkened world. Jesus calls us into His Marvellous Light – into courage instead of confusion, hope instead of despair, and bold love instead of quiet resignation. The Light of Christ breaks through sealed stones, closed systems, wounded hearts and weary nations, inviting us to live luminous lives of faith, hope and love. So, be a Light and LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE.
