The Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist was founded in Angri, Italy, in 1878 by St. Alfonso Maria Fusco. Its mission is to rescue children from vulnerable situations and provide them with human, Christian, and professional formation, preparing them for a dignified future. The Institute was approved as a Pontifical Right on 1 March 1927 and recognized as a juridical body by the Italian State on 26 May 1932. Today, the Congregation serves in 19 countries across Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
St. Fusco established the Congregation on 26 September 1878 to focus on the evangelization, education, and upliftment of children and youth, especially the poor and at risk. He passed away on 6 February 1910 in Angri and was canonized on 16 October 2016.
In India, the CSJB began its mission in 1977 at Anna Nagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It became a Delegation in 1988 and was elevated to a Province in 2008. The Indian Province now includes 29 communities and 136 sisters across eight states: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Assam. Its ministries in India include education, healthcare, children’s homes, girls’ hostels, women’s empowerment, and various social services.
